ART + CULTURE: Hair is digitally distorted to psychedelic effect by visual artist Cristina Burns

Images: Cristina Burns
Interview: Alex Mascolo

Visual artist Cristina Burns creates vibrant imagery whose seemingly innocent nature often belies underlying darker meanings. Her surreal compositions often feature recurring motifs such as toys, sweets and flowers, which she combines with insects, skulls and other anatomical elements. Through this jarring juxtaposition of light and dark, Burns seeks to “blur the line between the themes of fantasy and reality, purity and sin, life and death”. In Melted, with Burns uses post-production to distort photographic imagery of two women with rainbow-coloured hair. Here, hair is manipulated to extremes, stretched and swirled into psychedelic patterns which cover the women’s faces entirely.
