Visual artist Cristina Burns creates vibrant imagery whose seemingly innocent subject matter often belies darker undercurrents. In her surreal compositions, recurring motifs such as toys, sweets and flowers are combined with insects, skulls and other anatomical elements. Through this jarring juxtaposition of light and dark, Burns seeks to “blur the line between the themes of fantasy and reality, purity and sin, life and death”. In her photo series Melted, Burns digitally distorts images of two women with rainbow-coloured hair. Manipulated to the extreme, hair is stretched and swirled into psychedelic patterns which conceal the women’s faces entirely.
