ART + CULTURE: These towering hair sculptures are not what they seem

Images: Petros Chrisostomou
Words: Emma de Clercq

Petros Chrisostomou’s photographs seem to capture the impossible. Gigantic stacks of hair are shown to dwarf the highbrow architectural spaces they inhabit. In reality, the New York based artist is a master illusionist, using miniature model interiors to craft his uncanny scenes. The resulting images are both playful and quietly beautiful, as Chrisostomou transforms a seemingly mundane object – a single lock of hair – into a towering totem.
