One of the winners of this year’s Portrait of Britain photography competition, Christoph Soeder’s series Clear-Cut depicts clients at the Atlantic barbershop in Newport, Wales. Soeder’s subjects are shown directly after having their hair cut, still wearing the shop’s distinctive striped barber gowns. Through their uniformity, the portraits highlight the way in which a communal space, like a barbershop, temporarily connects men from all different walks of life. “I find it particularly interesting how these people are all very different yet form a community at the same time,” he says.
