“Hair on the head is an element all humans deal with to aid in self-perception, other’s perceptions and real world presentation”

One of Jo Lane’s favourite subjects to capture is the back of a person’s head. Or rather, that person’s hairstyle, which is best observed anonymously from behind. “Hair is a trigger for me on many fronts, well, backs” the artist says. “It affords me the drawn line, it also has my respect as biological material manoeuvred and styled by its owners. I find it engaging through its constant visibility or absence and I read the social signals like a joyous novel.” The Melbourne artist, who is currently in the UK studying at the Wimbledon College of Arts, creates her delicate drawings using graphite. Here, we take a look at some of her recent works.
