Personas is a new interactive wig exhibition which invites the audience to consider: how much can a hairstyle shape a person? The site specific installation at Tokyo’s Circle Gallery encourages participants to try on various wigs crafted by hair artist Tomihiro Kono, who has based the distinctive styles on the pop icons that shaped his youth.

The exhibition is the second by Kono which explores the transformative power of hair. He first presented this idea at his 2018 Paris exhibition Wigs (Perruques), which similarly encouraged the audience to try on various extreme wigs and experience an instant, temporary transformation. This time, the focus is on the recreating the iconic hairstyles of the musicians and actors who Kono feels have provided him inspiration over the course of his life. “A variety of wigs can be used to create multiple personas,” he says, “it’s like wearing different masks. It can reflect your personality or can hide your true self in some way.”
