We are saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Baker, who passed away on the 27th November 2019 aged 59. Known as ’Baker’ in the hair industry, the editorial hairdresser and creative director of Neill started his hair journey working behind the chair in Wichita, Kansas.

A four-time nominee of the North American Hairstylist Awards, Baker’s career took him from Chicago to New York, and later to Los Angeles. Here, he became a firm fixture on the Hollywood circuit, with clients including Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt.

Baker was the founder of the Second Hand Scissor Project, which linked established and up-and-coming hairdressers, inventor of De-Bulker, a texturising trimmer as well as author of 5 x 5: The Stage, an educational session which he taught across the US.

A self-confessed ‘Fiber-Sculptor’, Baker also created a series of abstract artworks using the fibre of hair. Below, we share a selection of his works, and pay tribute to a true hair creative.
